Lake Corpus Christi State Park

For up to a century, families and campers have enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere and beautiful scenery of Lake Corpus Christi State Park for its water sports, varied wildlife and picturesque woodlands. Located on Park Road 25, four miles southwest of Mathis, Texas, this state park is like no other in terms of the refreshing, fun, and warm experience it offers to RV campers on vacation. Within the park, on Lake Corpus Christi, you can swim (no lifeguards), paddle, fish, boat, and water ski, while on land, you can camp, hike, bike, geocache, and bird and nature watch. The 356-acre Lake Corpus Christi State Park features fourteen screened shelters, nine cabins, and two pavilions, all for your ultimate holiday experience. At the campsites in the park, you can choose from campsites with water only, campsites with water and electricity, or campsites with full hookups (electricity, water, and sewer hookups) for your RVs/trailers.

Lake Corpus Christi, covering 21,000 acres, is one of the largest artificial bodies of water in Texas. The open waters of the lake, occasionally marshy margins of the lake, mixture of brushland, and the woodlands in Lake Corpus Christi State Park makes it a diverse ecological area. Common mammals include javelina and white-tailed deer.


Transportation

Driving

Lake Corpus Christi is easily accessible by RV, trailer or car, since it is on Park Road 25, located four miles southwest of Mathis, and 35 miles northwest of Corpus Christi. Local roads in the park connect all the campgrounds and recreational spots, hence you will have no problem navigating to any part of the park you want to in your RV/trailer or car. There are no driving restrictions for RVs or trailers in the park, as long as they are within specified length limits.

Parking

There are two parking lots for RVs and trailers in Lake Corpus Christi State Park. You’ll find these parking spaces at the Mesquite Camping Area, and the Opossum Bend Camping Loop. Overnight parking is available for overnight guests and campers at the park.

Javelina Camping Loop

Javelina Camping Loop in Lake Corpus Christi State Park features 20 pet-friendly campsites available for tents and RVs/trailers. All the campsites in this campground are wheelchair accessible and have full hookups options (electric, water, and sewer hookups) for your RV. RV/trailer length limit at the campground is 110 feet. Amenities at Javelina Camping Loop include restrooms, showers, picnic areas, fire ring with grill, shade shelters, and a dump station. Quiet time is from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. (no music or generators). Gathering of firewood is prohibited.

Opossum Bend Camping Loop

Opossum Bend Camping Loop in Lake Corpus Christi State Park features 19 pet-friendly campsites available for tents and RVs. All the campsites are equipped with electric hookups for your RV, and RV/trailer length limit in the loop is 91 feet. Restrooms are available in Opossum Bend Loop, in addition to the proximal boat ramp, fishing pier, fish cleaning facility, picnic area, Kayak & Paddleboard Rental facility, and parking lot. Public consumption or display of any alcoholic beverage is prohibited. Quiet time is from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. (no music or generators). Gathering of firewood is prohibited.

Mesquite Camping Area

Mesquite Camping Area in Lake Corpus Christi State Park has 24 pet-friendly campsites accessible to RVs/trailers. Some of the campsites are wheelchair accessible. All the campsites have access to water, but are not equipped with hookups for RVs/trailers. RV/trailer length limit in Mesquite Camping Area is 50 feet. Amenities at the campground include showers and restrooms, group picnic pavilion, boat ramp, picnic areas as well as a parking lot. Public consumption or display of any alcoholic beverage is prohibited. Peace and quiet hours is from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. (no music or generators). Gathering of firewood is prohibited.

Catfish Cove Camping Area

Catfish Cove Camping Area in Lake Corpus Christi State Park has 33 pet-friendly campsites accessible to RVs/trailers by local roads. All the campsites have access to water but are not equipped with hookups for RVs/trailers. Amenities at the campground include showers and restrooms, as well as a fishing pier. The campground connects to the trailhead of the Catfish Point Trail which leads to a scenic overlook of Lake Corpus Christi. Public consumption or display of any alcoholic beverage is prohibited. Peace and quiet hours is from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. (no music or generators). Gathering of firewood is prohibited.

In-Season
Fishing

Lake Corpus Christi State Park has two fishing piers, one of which is wheelchair accessible and 400 feet long. Hence there’s absolutely nothing stopping you from fishing in the 18,256-acre Lake Corpus Christi during your RV vacation at the park. In addition, there are two boat ramps and two fish cleaning shelters in the park for enhanced fishing experience. Not to worry, you don’t need a fishing license to fish at the park. Birding

Lake Corpus Christi State Park is an exceptional destination for RV campers to watch and study birds because the park is rich and diverse in bird species, having more than 200 bird species. Neotropical migrant birds make stopovers and landfalls at the park, giving an added and rare privilege to campers. Common birds in Lake Corpus Christi State Park include the black-bellied whistling-duck, purple gallinule, white-winged dove, pauraque, long-billed thrasher, white-eyed vireo, pyrrhuloxia and black-throated sparrow. So, bring your binoculars along!

Hiking

Pack your hiking boots and gear as you visit Lake Corpus Christi State Park on your RV vacation because there are several trails that vary in difficulty and lead to scenic overlooks. The Catfish Point Trail around the Catfish Point camping area in the southern end of the park offers RV campers the opportunity to have a breathtaking view of the 18,256-acre Lake Corpus Christi. Hike on the Kiskadee Trail in the Bird’s Nest Shelter Area to access the Birding Area where the beautiful birds in the park can be seen.

Off-Season
Swimming

Lake Corpus Christi State Park presents a good opportunity for RV campers to swim in the 60-feet deep Lake Corpus Christi and enjoy the warmth of the stained to partly clear lake. There are no lifeguards on duty at the park, hence, safety precautions are recommended when you go swimming in the lake. Ensure you swim in the designated No-Wake zones around the campgrounds.

Paddling and Kayaking

Paddling is allowed on Lake Corpus Christi in the park. So, whether you brought your own paddleboard in your RV or want to rent one at the park, you are guaranteed a sweet paddling experience. Besides, you can engage in kayaking for pleasure on the lake, or compete with your fellow campers. Within the No-wake zones, speed limits for boats inside buoys is three miles per hour. There are parking lots for your RV around the boat ramps when you want to paddle or kayak at the Lake Corpus Christi.

Ranger Programs

There are different Ranger Programs offered by the park at different times of the year for RV campers to participate in for a better appreciation and understanding of the park and its history. Some of these activities include Skulls and Furs, Geocaching 101, Kids Bird Feeder Decorating, Bird Walks etc.
