Perry State Park

Located on the shores of Perry Reservoir in Kansas, Perry State Park has one of the best networks of hiking and biking trails in the state. And you’ll find dozens of species of birds and mammals, as well as hundreds of species of plants and trees, making it a great destination for nature watching.

You’ll also have a great time out on the water whenever you visit Perry State Park in your RV, campervan, or trailer. The reservoir allows motorized boats, so you can water and jet ski, in addition to kayaking and canoeing. And you’ll find waters that are well populated with a variety of fish species, such as crappie and channel catfish.

The campground found within the park has over 100 sites with electrical and water hookups for you to pick from for your rig. And if you want a more rustic RV camping experience, you can choose one of the primitive campsites.


Transportation

Driving

Located in northeastern Kansas, Perry State Park is within driving distance of multiple major cities in the surrounding region. And the park has well paved, wide roads that make getting to your campsite a breeze, no matter the size of your rig.

If you are coming from Kansas City, take I-70 west out of the city and you’ll get to the park in around an hour. And from Omaha, take US-75 south from the city to reach the park in a little under three hours.

Once you arrive at the park, the roads are mostly well maintained, so you shouldn’t have too many issues finding your way to the campground.

Campsites in Perry State Park

Reservations Camping
Lake View Campground

As the name of the campground states, the sites are all located next to the water, with great views of the lake. The sites have electrical and water hookups. The maximum driveway length is 225 feet, so you’ll be able to find a site for even the biggest rigs. Every site comes with a grill and picnic table. The sites are also pet-friendly, as long as you keep your dog on a leash.

There are showers and restrooms within walking distance of all of the sites. You’ll also have easy access to the park’s hiking trails, as well as the boat launch and beach area.

The campground is open from March through October, although there are a few sites that stay open through December. All of the sites can be reserved online up to six months in advance, and you’ll need to book at least a day before you arrive. The park is a popular summertime destination, so you should try to book as early as possible when visiting during this period.

Cougar Pass Campground

Like the sites at the Lake View Campground, the sites at Cougar Pass all have electrical and water hookups. You’ll also have a picnic table and grill, and are within walking distance of showers and restrooms. The campground is pet-friendly, although all dogs must be kept on a leash. The campground is close to many of the park’s hiking trails, including the nature trail, as well as the boat launch and beach area.

In-Season
Hiking

With over 40 miles of trails, Perry State Park has some of the best hiking in the area. The trails work their way along the coast of Perry Lake, making for scenic water views. And you’ll also be able to spot the many birds, mammals, and species of plant life found in the park.

The trails offer a wide range of difficulty levels, so hikers of all ages and experience levels should be able to find a hike that is perfect for them. The trails are open year round, but are at their best in spring and fall.

Biking

The park also has a network of 15 miles of biking trails, making it a great destination for mountain bikers. The varied terrain and elevation changes make the rides interesting, and you’ll be able to immerse yourself in all of the park’s wildlife.

Like with hiking, the biking in the park tends to be best spring through fall. And always take extra caution when biking, as the trails are shared with hikers, and there are a number of sharp turns.

The park does not offer rental gear of any kind, so you’ll have to make sure you have everything you need with your rig.

Boating

In addition to all of the land based activities, RV campers will find plenty to do on the water. Perry Reservoir is a great summertime destination for those who want to water or jet ski. And the long shoreline is also great to explore by kayak or canoe, as you can float your way next to the shaded forests populated with dozens of species of birds and mammals.

There is a boat launch located near the main beach area of the park, so you should have no problems getting your boat onto the water from your rig.

Off-Season
Birdwatching

There are over one hundred species of bird that visit the park throughout the year, making it an excellent destination for RV campers interested in bird watching. And the dense forests with miles of hiking trails mean you’ll have plenty of opportunities to spot the park’s birds.

Before you visit the park, you should check the websites of the local birdwatching groups, many of whom produce field guides and bird checklists. And consult the park office, as they often have more information on all of the species that can be found in the park.

Fishing

Perry Lake is also a popular destination for fishers, as the waters are well populated with a variety of fish species. You’ll find white crappie, white bass, channel catfish, and blue catfish, in addition to many other species. And there’s a boat launch that makes it easy to get out onto the water.

Fishing tends to be best running from March through September, although anglers will still get plenty of action year round. Do note that some of the boat ramps are closed during the winter months.

Horseback Riding

The park’s network of trails is also open to horseback riding year round, making it a great choice for equestrian minded RV campers. The trails come to life in the fall, making for excellent autumn riding through the colorful lakeside forests.

Always take caution and use common courtesy on the trails, as they are shared with hikers and mountain bikers. The park does not offer any stables or an equestrian campground.
